Peel police have arrested and charged a Brampton man in relation to death threats made against Mayor Patrick Brown and his family.

In a news release posted on Wednesday, Peel police said authorities were notified in late June that Brown and his family had received threatening messages.

Officers from 22 Division’s Criminal Investigation Bureau then launched an investigation.

“As a precaution, enhanced security measures were provided to ensure their safety while the matter was investigated,” according to the news release.

At an unrelated press conference on Tuesday, Brown noted that this isn’t the first time he’s been the target of a death threat.

“I’ve got great confidence in the Peel police. I feel safe because we have a great police force in Peel region. This is not the first time I’ve received a death threat, I did so a number of years ago, I’m sure it won’t be the last and it certainly won’t change my approach.”

Following the execution of search warrants and the seizure of electronic devices, police said they arrested 29-year-old Kanwarjyot Singh Manoria, of Brampton, on July 15.

He has been charged with one count of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.

Manoria was held for a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.

Following the arrest, Mayor Patrick Brown expressed his gratitude to Peel police on social media, commending their work on the investigation.

“Violence and threats of violence have no place in a democracy. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the citizens of Brampton, and threats will not deter me from doing the job they elected me to do,” Brown tweeted on X.

Investigators say they believe the accused acted alone and does not pose any further threat to the mayor, his family or the public.

Peel police say the investigation remains ongoing.
