To say that Devin the Dude only talks about weed would be a bit of a misstatement. He does rhyme and sing about other topics. On his latest, Suite 420, those include sex, relationships, gossip and business, but it always comes back to his favourite plant.

Like the smoke emanating from his doobie ashtray, the weed talk permeates every subject. The endearing Houston rapper goes out of his way to note the “green in his jeans” while telling an unrelated story on Pick My Brain Ultimate High finds him praying, with vapour in the air.
Devin’s single-mindedness makes for a highly unified style, and the album’s relaxed, hazy production is the aural equivalent of comfort food. But the repetition is kinda tedious for an hour of straight listening. Suite 420 is best enjoyed in small doses.
