Multiple road closures in place due to Toronto construction and events – here’s where to avoid

Sunday will look a bit different when it comes to navigating downtown streets.

Multiple road closures caused traffic slow downs and reroutes across the city on Sunday, leaving Torontonians to figure out detours while commuting.

As the April 25 and 26 weekend wraps up, here’s the last minute road closures to look out for.

Gardiner Expressway closure

The City of Toronto is completing maintenance on Gardiner Expressway through the weekend, until around 5 a.m. on Monday, April 27.

This construction is in preparation for FIFA World Cup festivities, with the first match on June 12, with Canada facing off against Bosnia & Herzegovina.

The Gardiner Expressway was fully closed off from Humber River to Spadina Avenue. Construction began at 11 p.m. on Friday, April 24, until 5 a.m. on Monday, April 27.

In a Facebook post on Saturday afternoon, the City of Toronto confirmed progress made with maintenance, completing significant work towards paving, lighting fixes and more.

“Crews made strong progress on the Gardiner today, completing milling and other preparations for paving, along with catch basin cleaning and flushing, high‑mast lighting repairs, and structural inspections, and will keep working through the night,” the city said in part.

Work will continue further north on the Don Valley Parkway, with the highway expected to be closed from Highway 401 to the Jarvis Street ramp on the Gardiner, starting 11 p.m. on Friday, May 8, until 5 a.m. on Monday, May 11.

Queen Street West, Bay Street, Wellington Street West, University Avenue

A parade for an annual Sikh festival will lead to some closures around Nathan Phillips Square on Sunday.

The Khalsa Day event begins in front of city hall at 11 a.m. and runs through the day.

Road closures began earlier for preparation work, with Queen Street West, from Bay Street to York Street, closed beginning at 5 a.m., lasting throughout the day until 8 p.m.

Additional closures began at 12 p.m. on Bay Street from Dundas Street West to Front Street, on Wellington Street from Yonge Street to University Avenue, and on University Avenue from Front Street to Dundas Street West. These closures are expected to lift around 4 p.m. as the event concludes.

The parade begins at 1:30 p.m. and ends at 3:30 p.m., back at Nathan Phillips Square.
