Ontario reported 1,050 new cases of COVID-19 and 14 more deaths on November 3.

Today’s case growth marks is a record high and the third time a single-day increase in infections has crossed the 1,000 mark.

Labs in the province completed just 25,279 tests, pushing the positivity rate up to 4.2 per cent. There’s a backlog of around 20,700 specimens waiting to be processed.

Testing fell well below the province’s daily lab capacity of 45,000.

Toronto continues to lead the province in new infections, but Halton and Durham regions surpassed hotspot Ottawa with daily double-digit increases.

“Locally, there are 408 new cases in Toronto, 212 in Peel, 86 in Halton, 76 in York Region and 57 in Durham,” Health Minister Christine Elliott said on Twitter. “There are 837 more resolved cases.”

There are 357 patients in hospital, including 73 in intensive care and 47 on ventilators. The number of outbreaks in long-term care homes remained unchanged at 78.

There are now 8,295 confirmed active cases of COVID-19 in the province and the seven-day moving average of daily cases rose to 950.

The province reported 948 new cases on Monday977 on Sunday, 1,015 on Saturday, 896 on Friday and 934 on Thursday.

To date, there have been 78,705 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ontario. Of those, 67,244 are resolved and 3,166 people have died.

On Monday, Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health Eileen de Villa said the epidemic was not getting better or worse in Toronto.

“While this is not where I would like our numbers to be, the situation is not escalating,” she said during a city hall press briefing, adding that daily case growth seemed to have plateaued at just over 300 new infections per day.

De Villa and Mayor John Tory said the province and city are in active discussions around a safe reopening of restaurants and other businesses from 28-day modified lockdown restrictions.

Premier Doug Ford said yesterday that he would be presenting a safe reopening plan for hotspot regions Toronto, Peel, York and Ottawa to his cabinet this week.
