Toronto police are investigating after gunfire was heard outside the U.S. Consulate in downtown Toronto early Monday morning, just over four months after the building was targeted in a separate shooting.
Officers in the area heard a firearm being discharged near the consulate at 360 University Ave, at approximately 4:46 a.m., according to a Toronto Police post on X.
Police said evidence of the discharge was located outside the building. A white sedan was spotted fleeing the scene, but investigators have not released a suspect description.
No injuries have been reported, and no arrests have been announced.
As of 7:16 a.m., Toronto Police announced that University Avenue is closed at Dundas Street for vehicles and pedestrians, stating to use alternate routes.
Police have confirmed that the shooting happened outside the consulate but said it is too early to determine whether the gunfire was directed at the building or a person, according to media reports.
Incident marks second shooting outside of U.S. Consulate this year
The incident came months after the consulate was struck by gunfire on March 10. In that case, police allege two suspects exited a stolen Honda CR-V and fired multiple rounds at the building’s entrance before fleeing. No injuries were reported during that time.
The RCMP previously described the March shooting as a “national security incident.” Several suspects were eventually arrested and charged in connection with the March attack.
Police have not announced whether Monday’s shooting is connected to that incident.
