From different generations to different genre preferences, this will be a conversation that is forever debatable. Does Toronto have an anthem and what is it?
Every city has its song from New York’s anthem “Empire State Of Mind” by Alicia Keys And Jay-Z to LA’s “California Love” by Tupac, can Toronto really decide on one song? Well, we are settling it now!
While this is entirely an opinionated question we wanted to know what song represents Toronto best so we talked to experts in the music community, locals, and even gathered opinions from online to put together a list of the top five choices of “Toronto Official Anthem”
Iconic DJ 4Korners, who has been the Raptors’ DJ since 2005, says Drake’s hit “Started from the Bottom” is the city’s anthem.
“It is hard to not say that song just simply because Toronto and Canada as a whole have always felt like an underdog situation. And when I played that song when we won the NBA championship the electricity I felt throughout the city, we felt that.” he told The Brandon Gonez Show, Now Toronto’s sister station.
4korners also mentioned that Kardinal Offishall’s “Bakardi Slang” could be a contender.
Meanwhile, rising Toronto star Haviah Mighty shared her thoughts on what she thinks Toronto’s anthem is. “I would say Nonstop by Drake, to me that’s like an anthem.”
TORONTONIANS WEIGH IN
We hit the streets and asked Torontonians what they thought.
“Something by Sadboi because I really feel like her vibe has the Caribbean influence that Toronto has. She’s young, she’s fresh and she’s putting in on for the city,” one unidentified resident said.
“One Dance by Drake… I remember hearing it all over the radio when I was a kid,” another said.
We also asked online and the comments came back with some strong opinions. So, we decided to go through the comments and put together a list of the top five choices that Torontonians decided on as “Toronto Official Anthem.”
