Just one day after Torontonians returned to work amid snowy conditions, Environment Canada has issued a freezing rain warning that could last for “several hours.”
According to the federal weather agency, the precipitation is expected to begin around midday and continue into the early evening hours.
Environment Canada says the precipitation will initially fall as a “patchy” freezing drizzle before transitioning into freezing rain. Rainfall amounts are expected to range between one and five millimetres.
As a low-pressure system moves through much of southern Ontario, the freezing rain may at times be mixed with snow or ice pellets before eventually changing over to rain or snow.
The messy weather follows a snowfall warning that affected much of the city on Monday. Some areas saw snowfall totals of up to 10 centimetres, according to Environment Canada.

The agency is warning both pedestrians and drivers that roads and walkways may become icy and slippery, with hazardous conditions that could be difficult to detect.
Environment Canada also notes that localized power outages may be possible as a result of the freezing rain.
Despite the unsettled weather, Toronto is expected to experience warmer-than-seasonal temperatures for much of the week, with daytime highs remaining above the freezing mark.
Tuesday’s forecast calls for a high of 2 C, with an overnight low of 1 C.
