The president of Canada’s largest documentary film festival, Hot Docs, has stepped down and in turn, the festival is looking to forge a new path.

On Tuesday night, the festival revealed that President Marie Nelson is leaving her post after just one year of being with the company.

“Marie came to us in July 2023 with an incredible record of executive leadership in independent documentary film, news, and broadcasting. Under her guidance, the Hot Docs team set forth with ambitious objectives aimed at elevating the Festival’s profile and expanding its reach with year-round programming,” a statement by Hot Docs read.

The festival says it is proud of the work it has accomplished with Nelson at the helm and are confident that the groundwork she has laid will further assist it.

Currently, the festival is undergoing financial issues and is in an uncertain position when it comes to its future.

Back in May, the festival announced temporary layoffs and a three-month closure of its flagship theatre, Ted Rogers Cinema.

This comes following a staff upheaval when several workers left prior to the festival revealing its 2024 lineup, amid rumours of a toxic work environment. During this time, the organization’s Artistic Director, Hussain Currimbhoy, also stepped down from his role.

According to a Canadian Press report, Hot Docs is dealing with a “substantial operating deficit due to slow post-pandemic recovery” despite a successful 31st edition of its festival. Back in May, Nelson also foreshadowed that this year’s festival could be the last.

For now, the festival is looking forward to its next chapter.

“During this time of transition, Hot Docs will continue to forge a new path to create a sustainable future for organizational and financial growth,” the company stated.
