Spotify Wrapped 2024 is out! Here’s how Canadian artists took over the world

That’s a wrap on another stellar year of music, according to Spotify, with Canadian artists like Drake and The Weeknd topping global streaming lists. 

Digital music giant Spotify has released its annual campaign, Spotify Wrapped, a personalized user experience which celebrates fans’ most listened to artists during the year. From breakout pop stars skyrocketing to the top of charts to genre-bending artists creating new waves, the compilation highlights user listening trends in Canada and beyond. 

SPOTIFY’S TOP ARTISTS OF 2024

In Canada, Taylor Swift was crowned as the number one most-streamed artist in the country, followed by Toronto rapper Drake, while Scarborough singer The Weeknd took the seventh spot on the list. The victory comes only less than two weeks after Swift brought a sea of sequins and friendship bracelets to the city, with her Eras Tour taking over Toronto for six shows in November.

Swift’s achievements stretched beyond our borders, as she became Spotify’s 2024 Global Top Artist for the second year in a row, garnering more than 26.6 billion streams worldwide. Our homegrown artists didn’t fall far behind, with The Weeknd coming in at #2 worldwide, while Drake checked in at #4. 

Spotify also highlighted its Top Five Exported Canadian artists dominating charts across the world. The number one spot goes to The Weeknd, followed by Drake and Justin Bieber. Calgary-born singer and songwriter Tate McRae took the fourth spot, while Shawn Mendes concluded the list at number five.

SPOTIFY’S TOP SONGS OF 2024 

Canadians were getting a little tipsy this year, with Shaboozy’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” clocking in at the number one most streamed song in the country. It’s no surprise that the Virginia native took the top spot, with his country song spending 19 weeks and counting at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, tying the all-time record set by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus’s “Old Town Road” in 2019. 

Other songs that Canadians couldn’t get out of their heads included “Beautiful Things” by Benson Boone in the number two spot, followed by “I Had Some Help” by Post Malone featuring Morgan Wallen, “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter, and “Stick Season” by Noah Kahan.

But across the globe, music listeners were addicted to Carpenter’s smash-hit “Espresso,” with the song earning more than 1.6 billion streams worldwide.

In second and third, respectively, are “Beautiful Things” by Benson Boone with a reappearance at number two and “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” by Billie Eilish at number three, followed by “Gata Only” by FloyyMenor and Cris Mj in the fourth spot, and “Lose Control” by Teddy Swims to round out the top five global songs. However, the Weeknd popped up once again in the list, holding the eighth spot with “One Of The Girls” featuring JENNIE and Lily Rose Depp.

SPOTIFY’S TOP ALBUMS OF 2024 

In Canada, familiar faces graced Spotify’s top five album list. 

Taylor Swift’s THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT: THE ANTHOLOGY was proven to be album of the year, coming in as number one as the most-listened to album in the country this year.

Following the Swift-sanity, Stick Season by Noah Kahan clocked in at number two, followed by  One Thing At A Time by Morgan Wallen. Short n’ Sweet by Sabrina Carpenter was on repeat at number four, while Billie Eilish’s HIT ME HARD AND SOFT rounded out the top five most streamed albums in Canada. 

Globally, the top albums looked similar, with Swift, Eilish and Carpenter taking top spots. However, The Weeknd made an appearance at number ten with his 2016 hit project, Starboy.
