A new open-air music venue is set to open in Toronto next summer, and the announcement is garnering mixed reactions from residents.
Live Nation revealed Thursday morning that it would open Rogers Stadium in June 2025.
Spearheaded by Northcrest Developments, once complete, the 50,000-capacity seasonal arena, located in the former Downsview Airport Lands, will become Toronto and the GTA’s largest purpose-built music venue.
However, Rogers Stadium will serve as a temporary fixture as Northcrest’s $30B transformation project for the area unfolds over the coming years, Live Nation confirmed.
The demand for high-capacity arenas in the city is greater than ever, Live Nation argues.
“The number of stadium-level acts touring today is unprecedented, with more acts than available nights at existing venues. That’s why we’re making this investment—to ensure Toronto fans don’t miss out on world-class artists,” Erik Hoffman, president of music at Live Nation Canada, said in a press release.
Moreover, at a press conference on Thursday, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said the new venue is expected to inject $80-$100 million into Toronto’s economy.
“This exciting venue will bring even more tourists and investment to our province, boosting local businesses, creating new jobs and drawing in artists and events from around the world,” he said.
Meanwhile, Torontonians have been sharing their thoughts on the announcement, with some joking that the name of the new concert venue is confusing given its similarity to existing locations.
“How many people are going to go to Rogers Centre instead of Rogers Stadium for a show,” one Reddit user wrote.
“We already have this problem with Meridian Hall and the Meridian Arts Centre too,” another person added.
Others expressed a mixture of excitement and dissatisfaction in light of Rogers’ growing monopoly within the Canadian entertainment industry.
Earlier this month, Rogers purchased Bell’s 37.5 per cent ownership stake in MLSE to become its majority shareholder, now owning 75 per cent of the company, which owns the Toronto Maple Leafs and Raptors.

“My appreciation for a new music venue is battling my dislike for monopolies [they] are making our lives worse, not better, I’d argue,” one Reddit user said.
“Boycott Live Nation,” another person commented
“Hard to boycott when there’s no competition,” someone else replied.
But Mayor Olivia Chow says Rogers Stadium will help to better Toronto.
“The economic impact will benefit our city.. this new stadium will continue to cement Toronto as the premiere destination for the arts,” she said at the press conference.
Ontario Minister of Tourism, Culture and Gaming Stan Cho, who was also in attendance, echoed the mayor’s sentiments.
“Rogers Stadium will strengthen Toronto’s role as a top destination for international tours and live entertainment, drawing world-class artists and fans from around the globe,” he wrote on X.
