The TTC says the long-awaited Line 5 Eglinton Crosstown is coming soon, but Torontonians aren’t so sure.
The Toronto Transit Commission’s (TTC) latest update this week promises details on the line’s opening date will be revealed over the next few weeks.
The fully accessible Line 5, which went under construction in 2011, will run 19-kilometres between Mount Dennis to Kennedy Station, with a total of 25 stops.
Last month, TTC opened Line 6 Finch West, an 18-stop Light Rail Transit (LRT) line running along Finch Avenue West. The route took six years to begin operations, and became the city’s first rapid transit line addition in more than 20 years.

TTC announced the line on Nov. 20, two weeks ahead of its Dec. 7 commencement, and days later, revealed the opening date on Nov. 24.
If the agency follows a similar timeline, that could mean the Line 5 is looking at an opening date sometime in early February.
Originally projected to open in 2020, the line’s lengthy delay has become an annoyance for many Torontonians. One comedian, who chose to make light of the frustrating situation, even threw a quinceañera to commemorate its 15th anniversary of construction.

Online, many Toronto residents aren’t impressed with the TTC’s latest update.
“It’s actually very funny to put up this web page without an opening date,” one person said on Reddit.
“When it opens, whenever that will be, the at grade portion of this line is going to cause massive delays, and major headaches,” another said.
“One smooth incredibly slow ride just like the Finch West,” another person wrote on the platform.
Revenue Service Demonstration for the line wrapped in December 2025, which indicates that the opening date is on the way.

Earlier this month, Ontario Premier Doug Ford also said he’s “confident” that the LRT will begin service in early February.
But once again, the TTC did not provide an opening date at this time.
