Theatre performances, Beaches Jazz Festival and Salsa on St. Clair: Here are events happening in July

This month, we’ve got an amazing roundup of events happening throughout the city. In July, people can enjoy the Beaches International Jazz Festival, theatrical performances, and a salsa festival, among other exciting events. 

FESTIVALS & EVENTS

RHYTHMS OF CANADA

Toronto’s Aga Khan Museum is inviting you to its Rhythms of Canada festival. The four-day event features delicious food, activities for all ages, special programming, and musical performances by local and international artists. There will also be magic shows, face painting and workshops for the whole family to try. The festival is from June 30 to July 3. Tickets are $25 each.

2023 TO Summer Music Festival

The Toronto Summer Music Festival is a month-long festival happening from July 6-29. This year’s theme is “Metamorphosis,” which represents an era of new ideas built on the foundation of classics. The festival showcases world-renowned artists, such as Angela Hewitt, Sondra Radvanovksy, the New Orford String Quartet, and more. Ticket prices start at $20 each with discounts available for those under 35 years old and those over 65.

Free Summer City Hall Live

The city has organized a line up of free events taking place at City Hall throughout the entire summer. City Hall Live is an event series which highlights Toronto bands, venues, grassroots music organizations and presenters. City Hall Live says the event creates paid opportunities for Toronto musicians and provides live music performances for residents and visitors. Dates vary for each performance.

IncluCity Festival at Distillery District

Organized by the Italian Contemporary Film Festival, the 2023 Lavazza IncluCity Festival is a celebration of multiculturalism and the best in international cinema. Visitors will be able to watch a variety of foreign films in an outdoor cinema village at The Distillery Historic District from June 27 to July 21. The festival includes films from over 20 countries, such as Italy, France, and the United States, among others. There will also be special guest appearances, stellar red carpets, and unique cocktail experiences all under the stars in the arts and cultural hub of Toronto.

STAGE

‘The Effect,’ Coal Mine Theatre 

The Coal Mine Theatre is hosting the Canadian premiere of The Effect by Lucy Prebble, 

directed by Mitchell Cushman. The film focuses on a clinical romance surrounding the lives of two young volunteers, named Tristan and Connie, who agree to take part in a clinical drug trial. The screening is available from July 9-30. General admission tickets cost $67.50.

Hadestown 

Royal Alexandra Theatre presents the Tony-award winning musical Hadestown from July 5 to Aug. 20. The acclaimed new show, from singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell and innovative director Rachel Chavkin, is about a love story which they describe is for “today and always.” Hadestown is about two mythic tales, one of young dreamers, Orpheus and Eurydice, and that of King Hades and his wife Persephone.

ROM, Free Main Floor & free Canada Day

Celebrate Canada Day at the Royal Ontario Museum for free and plan another visit for its Free Main Floor event from July 2 to Sept. 4, where visitors can check out the ROM’s first floor at no cost. The popular event will have live performances and educational activities for kids. This year, the performances will take place outside the building on the Helga and Mike Schmidt Performance Terrace overlooking Philosopher’s Walk.

Imposter Cities at MOCA

If you’re a fan of Canada’s architecture, you can check out MOCA Toronto’s new exhibition titled 

“Impostor Cities,” curated by Thomas Balaban, David Theodore and Jennifer Thorogood. The exhibit explores the ways Canada’s buildings and cities double as other places in film and television. The project examines movies as powerful sites for architecture, expression and authenticity. The exhibit is available until July 23. Tickets are $14 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Admission is free for those under 18 years old.

Beaches International Jazz Festival

The Beaches International Jazz Festival is a free month-long music festival that takes place in the lakeside Beaches community of Toronto. Every year, the festival attracts thousands of fans throughout the month, with its internationally acclaimed jazz performances, as well as local talent. Jazz lovers can catch shows at a number of venues in the city such as the Woodbine Park Main Stage, Jimmie Simpson Park Main Stage and Big Band Stage. The 35th celebration kicks off on July 6-30. Programming includes Sounds of Leslieville & Riverside, Salsa on the Beach, 90’s Night, Woodbine Park Main Stage, StreetFest, Groovin’ in the Park, and the TD Workshop Series.

Salsa on St.Clair   

Dance and eat until your heart’s content at Salsa on St. Clair. The TD Salsa on St. Clair Street Festival is considered one of the biggest Latin-themed street parties in the country. Torontonians can enjoy Latino beats, as well as authentic Latin American flavours from Winona Dr. to Christie St. The award-winning free festival has garnered international recognition and attracts hundreds of thousands of salsa lovers from near and far to the city. Visitors can also keep the party going at Lula Lounge for after parties and live performances from Son Ache, Son D’Aqui, Cafe Cubano and Latin Swing.
