Scotiabank customers are expressing their frustrations online after several reports of a widespread system outage in Canada.
The bank posted on X Friday morning, saying that it’s working to rectify the issue and apologizing to customers for the setback.
However, Scotiabank did not give a timeline of how long it would take to resolve the problem.
Telecommunications outage tracking website DownDetector has reported over 5,000 affected bank customers so far, with 89 per cent of the cases involving issues with depositing.
Many customers are livid and getting online to share their disappointing experience with the company, especially those who were looking forward to their Friday paychecks.
“A group of my colleagues and I didn’t get paid overnight because there is a supposed Scotia outage that has been ongoing since yesterday,” one X user said. “What is being done to fix this?”
“Hey @ScotiabankHelps @scotiabank everything I have is with you, and now we have nothing to pay our bills today. I can’t get groceries for my children. I can’t put gas in my car,” another user complained.
“Fellow @scotiabank customers who didn’t get paid today and whose rent is due, we ride at dawn,” a user wrote.
Some are even calling for the bank to be investigated by the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions and fined for the inconvenience.
“Banks should be fined when they mess up like @scotiabank in half the country right now their customers are seeing that they didn’t get paid. Yet they are still going to collect our fees,” one user on X said.
“No communication from Scotiabank at all. @OSFICanada this needs to be investigated,” another user said.
One week ago today, Toronto banks, along with hospitals and airlines experienced operational difficulties due to a massive global Microsoft IT outage.
