A week later, the Weeknd changed his Twitter and Instagram display name to “Abel Tesfaye,” which is his birth name. His profile handles, however, remain “@theweeknd.”

In the W Magazine interview, Abel explained he was in a “cathartic” period and is “getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter.”

Although the XO record label head may continue to make music under the end of the week descriptor, he is also warming fans up to potentially creating music under his birth name.

“It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn,” The Weeknd said in the interview.

Tesfaye also revealed he is currently working on his last project as the Weekend, and believes he has completed his story using the popularized stage name, according to the magazine interview.

Fans and online spectators alike are sharing their thoughts, many of which are not in support of the eventual change.

In a concept photo of Tesfaye holding a camera, from the W Magazine shoot, one commentator wrote, “Bro don’t quit the weeknd era” with a crying face emoji.

Some seem to believe the Weeknd is quitting music all together and are pleading with the artist to continue his consist creative output, commentating on Instagram,“Dude plz don’t quit ur songs is my drugs” and another said “DONT QUIT PLSSSS.”
